The 2022–23 academic year was an exciting and busy one for the UW–Madison Department of Economics. The department continues to see many students drawn to the study of economics, and it is one of the most popular majors year after year. The Grainger Foundation’s significant investment helps ensure that we provide an outstanding experience for our students. As an intellectually rigorous department, we are proud of our faculty, who are world renowned for their research expertise and for their high caliber teaching and mentorship. Your generosity allows us to attract and retain top faculty who will continue to propel the Department of Economics to the top of the rankings. Our Juli Plant Grainger Institute for Economic Research (JPGI) faculty and scholars continue the department’s tradition of excellence through their top-tier research. A few of their timely research topics include the impact of natural disasters on businesses and consumers, how parental beliefs affect intergenerational mobility, and how the Young Child Tax Credit affected labor supply in California. This important work is conducted and prepared for academic journal publication with help from your gifts. Earning the title of JPGI scholar continues to be a mark of distinction among our graduate and undergraduate students. Our most impressive scholars earn these awards, which afford them the opportunity to conduct economic research with our top faculty. This collaboration further demonstrates our commitment to education and helps ensure that the UW Department of Economics remains a beacon of excellence around the world.
