Grainger VIP Impact Report
GRAINGER ENGINEERING DESIGN INNOVATION LAB
The Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Lab (GEDIL) is a vibrant 30,000-square-foot space where ideas become reality. Our team of 10 full-time staff members and 60 student staff members fuels a hands-on learning environment for the next generation of engineers and designers. Through workshops, training programs, our expansive Makerspace, a machine shop, and other specialized labs, students tackle real-world problems with confidence and are empowered to create innovative solutions. This past year brought major changes! Our new Design Hub is a game changer, offering expert guidance through every stage of the design process, from concept sketches to computer-aided design running finite element analysis and fabrication plans. It connects students to the amazing fabrication resources within GEDIL, all led by an industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience.
Student staff members work in the mini-mart where users can purchase materials for their projects.
We’ve also expanded our capabilities with new laser cutters, 3-D printers, an industrial robotic arm, and advanced milling and lathe machines. The machine shop was given a much needed makeover, revamped software, streamlined training, and reservations. Best of all, the $50 membership fee for undergraduates has now been removed, which has opened up the lab to even more students.
