The Rath Foundation - An Enduring Legacy at UW-Madison

The excellent professors, bright classmates, great friends, and unique campus/Madison atmosphere made for a very valuable and enjoyable educational experience. The Rath scholarship allowed me to focus on academics and self-care instead of part time jobs and stressing about finances. After graduating from UW School of Medicine and Public Health, I went on to do an emergency medicine residency at Washington University in Saint Louis, and was a chief resident my final year. I am now a physician and the assistant medical director for the emergency department at a wonderful hospital close to where I grew up in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The relief of debt has made a huge difference in numerous ways. Student debt, including medical school debt, can be oppressive. The scholarship allowed me to maintain a healthy work-life balance during the early years of my career and spend much more time with my family than many physicians. It also allowed my family to sustain healthy living habits while remaining focused on pursuing our life goals. In addition, my wife (who I met at UW–Madison ) and I have several organizations we work with and donate to: mostly community, environmental, and of course, the UW. Thank you for the opportunity to fully pursue my passions and helping me get to where I am today — it honestly would not have been possible without your support.
