The Rath Foundation - An Enduring Legacy at UW-Madison

Thanks to the Rath scholarship, I was able to choose a career in medicine without the heavy burden of student debt. It’s hard to express in words how thankful I am for this. The gift of freedom — of independence — of being able to choose a career path without financial burden is a gift that holds so much meaning. This relieved so much anxiety and worry and has benefited not only me but also my family and my patients. My education at the UW definitely taught me to be a better student, teacher, doctor, and human. I completed residency in pediatric neurology at University of California–San Francisco and have stayed on as assistant professor. I care for children with neurological concerns from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds and chose residency and now work at a hospital that serves racially and culturally diverse patients and families that unfortunately are often marginalized/oppressed/underserved. Rath scholarships give freedom from financial constraint, which ultimately gives time and power and choice and benefits not only to the scholar receiving the funding but to all those who surround the scholar.
