The Rath Foundation - An Enduring Legacy at UW-Madison

The Rath scholarship shaped my UW experience by supporting my PhD research and allowing the freedom to pick a research mentor and a topic to focus on during my PhD. Thanks to my UW education, I became a physician-scientist. I enjoyed learning how to conduct neuroscience research and how to become a physician. This was made even better by the incredible and supportive colleagues, mentors and environment at the UW. I am an assistant professor and anesthesiologist and critical care physician at Duke University, and I conduct research on the neurobiological mechanisms of delirium (acute confusion) that occurs following surgery and during critical illness. Rath scholarships are incredibly important as they provide essential financial support for students as they conduct their training in medical research. This allows them to focus solely on developing into accomplished physician-scientists. Having minimal student debt allowed me to continue my work at an academic center (versus taking a private-practice job), which enabled my research career to flourish. I currently conduct NIH-funded research on the role of blood-brain barrier breakdown in postoperative delirium. Receiving a Rath scholarship inspired me to give back. I donate annually to the Medical Scientist Training Program at UW– Madison. Thank you for your financial support during a critical time of my training in neuroscience research.
